Starting on 23 January 2010 from 19:00 hrs UTC (i.e. 24 Jan 03:00 hours GMT +8), companies and individuals will be able to register Chinese International Domain Names (IDNs) in the ORG domain extension on a first-come, first-served basis.

ORG Chinese IDNs have the potential to reach billions of Chinese speaking readers and customers, since it’s one of the world’s most popularly spoken languages.

IP Mirror is now accepting pre-registration for these domains and will attempt to register them on your behalf when the registry starts allowing registrations. 

 

Rules for New Registrations of .ORG Chinese IDN:

1) Each request to register a Chinese IDN must specify whether the domain name is Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese.  Requestor will be prompted by system after login.
2) Each domain name must contain at least one simplified Chinese or traditional Chinese character.  Numbers (0-9) and hyphen (-) can also be included as part of the Chinese IDN. 
3) ASCII characters (a-z) will not be supported
4) minimum length:  1 Chinese character
5) maximum length:  14 Chinese characters
6) All domain names are registered on a first come / first served basis
7) Registration term: between 1 and 10 years
8) Maximum variants allowed is 25.  Registration requests which will result in creation of more than 25 variants will be rejected.
9) Maximum of 25 preferred variants can be reserved.  Activation will not be supported initially.  Customers will be notified when variant activation support becomes available.

 

30-day Window for UDRP action filing

All .org Chinese IDN domain names registered during the first 30 days of operation between 23 January 2010 19:00 UTC and 22 February 2010, 19:00 UTC will be locked to provide intellectual property owners the opportunity to identify potential infringements of their Chinese IDNs and for any Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) actions to be filed.

While locked, these domain names will not resolve and cannot be updated, deleted or transferred, as they will be placed on Server Delete Prohibited, Server Transfer prohibited, Server update Prohibited, Server Renew prohibited and Server hold until 25 March 2010

 

Regarding previously-registered .ORG Chinese IDNs:

PIR will allow previously-registered .ORG Chinese IDN test bed names to resolve.   In order for this to happen, Registrants must contact their registrar to ensure that the respective .ORG Chinese IDN domain records are correctly updated in the .ORG registry.

Browsers supporting the .ORG Chinese IDNs include: The new Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE7), Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.4, Firefox 1.0 and Opera 7 are anticipated to be IDNA compliant browsers. Subsequent versions of these browsers are also expected to contain this same functionality.
