Chinese Domain Name
What is Chinese Domain Name (CDN)?
Chinese Domain Name (CDN) is introduced by CNNIC to facilitate internet users in China to use Chinese characters as their domain name. The use of localized language as a domain will facilitate easier internet access and also easier for the internet users in China to remember .
How Does CDN Work?
CDN works exactly the same as any other Latin domains. It follows the international protocol under Internationalised Domain Name international standard of IETF set up in March 2003 (RFC3454, RFC3490, RFC3491, RFC3492). CDN is under the management of CNNIC. Registered CDN can use application service such as www, email and ftp.
Popular Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox can already support CDN. For example, enter http://北京大学.cn or 北京大学.中国 on the browser and you will be directed to the website in Chinese.
Registration Policy
Registration is opened to companies as well as individuals.
- CDN can be composed of at least one Chinese character, alphabets (a-z), numeric (0-9) or symbols (-), and cannot exceed 20 characters.
- Both simplified and traditional scripts will be reserved.
- The following extension can be registered.
- 中国 (which means China) - equivalent to .CN (for example, if you register 我的名字.中国, you will be given 我的名字.cn as a package)
- 公司 (which means Company) - equivalent to .COM ( for example, If you register我的名字.公司, you will be given 我的名字.公司.cn as a package)
- 网络 (which means Network) - equivalent to .NET (for example, If you register 我的名字.网络, you will be given 我的名字.网络.cn as a package)
- The applicant for CDN must not infringe the rules summarized as follows:
- Those who are against the basic priniciples prescribed in the Constitution
- Those who jeopardize national security, leak state secrets, intend to overturn the government, or disrupt of state integrity
- Those who harm national honor and national interests

Renewal Policy
Chinese Domain name can be renewed up to 10 years. As soon as a CDN expires, the registry will remove it from its zone file, which will render all web applications and emails connected to the domain name un-resolvable. It is therefore important that you renew your domain names on time and before the expire date. You have 30 days to renew the domain before it goes into redemption grace period, where a fee is charge to activate the domain in addition to the renewal fees.
Transfer Policy between Registrars
- CDN transfer can be done by submitting directly transfer password to IP Mirror
- Transfers of CDN between registrars are done via transfer passwords. The registrant must get the transfer password from the losing registrar. There will be a one year renewal fee for every successful transfer.
- CDN cannot be transferred under the following situations:
- Within 60 days after the registration date of the CDN
- Within 15 days after the CDN is renewed
- The principal identity of the CDN holder is not defined or in dispute
- the CDN is being handled by judiciary, arbitration body and dispute resolution institution
- The transfer application violates other rules or notifications released by the Registry
- If the losing registrar does not provide transfer password of the Internet Keyword without any reasons, the registrant can fax a complaint letter to CNNIC and copy the same fax to IP Mirror regarding this matter. IP Mirror will assist in obtaining the password
